The hopscotch board on Third Street extends a warm welcome for patrons to visit Elkins newest boutique shop for infants and toddlers. The mother and daughter team of Sherry Hammer and Hope Anderson have recently opened Hopscotch, a store designed to offer everything anyone could imagine for infants and toddlers.
A grand opening celebration is scheduled for today at the store from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors will be treated to refreshments, door prizes, gifts for kids, discount coupons and a drawing for a $100 gift certificate.
"We want to introduce ourselves to the fine folks of Elkins by having them come in and meet us," Hammer said. "It's a neat little store. We have clothing and toys and bedding for infants and toddlers. It's a place you can go to find something special. Some things are very different and very unusual. We have a lot of interesting toys, including replica antique pedal cars and the Silver Pursuit air plane. We have a skirt that plays music, kids can dance to. Our store is just very pretty and very sweet."
Hopscotch offers a wide variety of toys, clothing and accessories including several West Virginia University-themed items. Customers can find tricycles, rocking horses, baby dolls, diaper bags and other useful items. The store carries a large collection of boys and girls clothing for premies up to 4T.
"We go to market and we try to find different lines that are not carried in the discount stores, lines that are mainly carried in boutiques," Hammer said. "We have one brand of clothing called Le Top. It's a beautiful brand of clothing. We continually try to find new things. Our customers keep giving us new ideas, so our lines keep growing."
Parents are welcome to bring their children to visit the store. An activity area is set up to allow children to play with the toys and see how they like them. A baby registry is also available for couples to select items they may need for a baby shower.
Hammer said the store started out as a baby department in Anderson's other store, Third Street Trading Co. She said demand for the baby items kept growing, so they decided to expand into a full store.
"The baby department was very popular and there was only so much room for it to grow," Hammer said. "Since this was next door, it was the logical next step."
Hopscotch is located at 117 Third St., in Elkins. The store is open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 304-637-0089.
