Light rain did not dampen the spirit of those who attended the Barbour County Fair Thursday evening as country music star Chuck Wicks took the stage and worked the crowd to an uproar.

"We have a good crowd considering the weather," Barbour County Fair Committee member Ron Schoonover said. "I hope the rain clears out because we have good shows Friday and Saturday."

Today, Whiskey Falls will take the stage for two shows at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. The four-piece band utilizes four-part harmonies.

Its debut album "Last Train Running" even affects band lead singer Steven Williams.

"I've been brought to tears a few times on stage by just how special the music is, how amazing the harmonies are," Williams said.

Live music is not the only thing on tap to get the fair visitors excited tonight. Bill King Racing of Philippi will sponsor the adult ATV drag races in the main arena. The adult riders will zoom over the dirt beginning at 7 p.m. Registration for the event will start at 5 p.m.

Also slated for tonight is the 4-H and Future Farmers of America Market Steer and Feeder Calf Show and Showmanship Contest. The event will begin at 7:30 p.m.

On Thursday, Wicks had the crowd swaying in their seats and singing along to his hits including "Stealing Cinderella."

"He is an awesome entertainer," Schoonover said. "He is down home country."

Currently on the road, Wicks will be opening for Brad Paisley's next tour.

One group of fans was standing outside the pavilion in the rain. Members of the Alderson- Broaddus College Girls Basketball Team screamed and danced around in their places watching Wicks. The girls assisted with parking at the fair.

"He is totally awesome," exclaimed Mallory Dilly.

Katie Pollak added, "Chuck Wicks is incredibly awesome. It is the best fair concert I have ever been to."

After his set, Wicks took time to meet fans as they lined up and waited patiently. About a half hour after he finished performing, there was still a line hoping to get a chance to meet the country star.

The smaller crowd allowed fair faithfuls to experience much of the rides and games with little to no wait. The midway stayed open even with the light rain falling throughout the evening.

Youth ATV races kept the crowd excited as contestants gave it their best to bring home prizes. Young children even competed on battery powered vehicles.

The Barbour County Fair will wrap up on Saturday with tractor pulls at noon, draft horse pulls at 6 p.m., a performance by Ocean City Skyline at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., Halfway to Hazard will take the stage for two shows at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Admission tonight and Saturday is $10 and tickets are available by calling the fair office at 823-1328.
