RCDA?Seeks Plan for Railyard Parking
By CARRA HIGGINS, Staff WriterAs the railyard and downtown Elkins continue to grow, the Randolph County Development Authority and the city of Elkins will have to create a plan for the influx of tourist parking.
Cars are parked throughout the railyard and downtown during larger events, such as Rail Fan Weekend. Some of the vehicles park illegally and owners receive tickets, RCDA Executive Director Jennifer Giovannitti said.
"They didn't know where to go," Giovannitti said.
Currently many busses park in a gravel lot in the railyard, but developers have plans for more buildings on the lot, Giovannitti said.
The RCDA and other interested parties will work with the Elkins Street Committee to create a long-term solution to parking and traffic problems in the downtown area, Giovannitti explained. Creating signs and/or letting people know of appropriate places to park outside the city limits are some ideas being considered, according to Giovannitti.
In other business of the RCDA:
- Giovannitti told members the Ribs and Rails event on Labor Day was an overall success.
- U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd informed the RCDA though a letter that he would continue to support an appropriations bill that includes $1 million for infrastructure at the railyard.
