A 69-year-old Maryland man is in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown after being struck by a vehicle while trying to cross the Beverly Five-lane around 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
According to Elkins Police Capt. J.E. Batdorf, Lawrence Shapiro, 69, of Beltsville, Md., was attempting to cross from the Super 8 hotel to the Steer Steakhouse when he was struck by a car traveling north. Batdorf said the name of the driver has not been released.
Shapiro was taken to Davis Memorial Hospital by the Randolph County Emergency Squad and later flown by helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital.
Batdorf said Patrolman C.D. Cross is still investigating the incident and, at this time, the officers have found no fault to the driver.
