Voter Registration Deadline?Is Tuesday
By CARRA HIGGINS, Staff WriterTuesday is the last day to register to vote for those who want to cast a ballot for the Nov. 4 General Election. A voter registration form must be on file in the county clerk's office or postmarked by Tuesday.
Hard copies of voter registration forms are available at county courthouses and the Division of Motor Vehicles. Forms are also available and can be downloaded from the West Virginia Secretary of State's Web site, www.wvsos.com, or www.wvvotes.com.
Randolph County Clerk Brenda Wiseman said the DMV time stamps voter registration forms, and as long as Tuesday's date appears, county clerks will honor the registration.
Voter registration may need to be updated if a person has moved since the last election.
All state offices, including the office of the county clerk and DMV, are closed today to observe Columbus Day. The Randolph County Clerk's office will be open Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Elkins branch of the DMV will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Wiseman says her office has been busy lately registering voters and preparing for the Nov. 4 election. Wiseman estimates Randolph County has 16,000 registered voters.
Anyone who is registered to vote in Randolph County may cast their ballots beginning Wednesday at the courthouse annex. Signs at the annex will direct voters where to go, Wiseman said. On Mondays through Fridays until Oct. 31, the early voting polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On the Saturdays of Oct. 25 and Nov. 1, early voting will be available in the annex from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A listing of all county early voting times are listed on www.wvvotes.com. The Web site also enables users to check their voter registration status. Voter registration status is also available at 1-866-SOS-VOTE. Those who are registered to vote can see their legislative district information and precinct number on the Web site.
Those who plan to vote early may park in the lot between the courthouse and old jail. Spots will be marked for early voters, but people may park anywhere in the lot, Wiseman said. Handicapped parking spots will also be marked.
