Region Offers Howling Good Halloween

By JULIEANNE COOPER, Region Editor
POSTED: October 30, 2008

Halloween is back on the scene for another year as millions of ghouls and boys dressed in costumes take to the streets tonight and Friday night, going door to door collecting candy and other holiday goodies.

There's lots more for children, adults and families to do this weekend to celebrate All Hallow's Eve. So slip into something spooky or silly and head out for a night of revelry.

Timberline Four Seasons Resort will host its annual Halloween party Friday, featuring live music, drink specials and a costume contest. And although the party begins on Friday, folks are invited back for more on Saturday as the infamous Masquerade Party gets under way at 9 p.m.

There is no admission charge for Timberline's Halloween events. Call 1-800-766-9464 or visit www.timberlineresort.com for more information.

While many may settle in to catch all the horror flicks on TV, others will be heading to Weston to the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum's Hospital of Horrors tours. Tours will be today and Sunday from dark until 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from dark until midnight.

These tours are not for the faint of heart and children age 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets may be purchased at the gate. For more information, call 269-5070 or visit the TALA Web site at www.transalleghenylunaticasylum.com."Bumps In The Night: Tales From Appalachia" will be presented Saturday by actress, teacher and vocalist Ilene Evans. Beginning at 4 p.m., Evans will present a collection of fun-filled - not too scary - old time ghost tales, songs and poems from Appalachia.

As part the of the Halloween-themed "Shivers, Whispers & Bumps in the Night" event, the Arts Center will sponsor a Great Pumpkin jack-o-lantern contest. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring in their creations for judging and awards. Joel Wolpert of Wolpertinger Farms and Bakery and manager of the Elkins Farmer's Market will be the judge. Doors will open at 3:30 p.m. to allow time for entering the contest.

The Randolph County Community Arts Center is located at the corner of Randolph Avenue and Park Street in Elkins. Tickets are $5 for all ages and a family pass for two adults and four children is also available for $20.

For reservations, call 304-637-2355. For more information, visit online at www.randolpharts.org.

Traditional old-time music will continue this weekend during Augusta's October Old-Time Week and annual Old-Time Fiddlers' Reunion at Davis & Elkins College.

On Friday, the Fiddlers' Reunion kicks off with a Halloween square dance at 8 p.m. in The Pit. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Music will be provided by Old-Time Week staff. Admission is $7 per person.

On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fiddlers' Reunion events center around a concert stage in the Lounge of the Hermanson Center. A series of performances by invited old-time masters and younger old-time musicians from all over West Virginia will take place all day. Freestyle clogging and flatfooting contests will be held on the stage at 4 p.m. Exhibits and sales by instrument vendors will be nearby.

Throughout the day, tune and song swaps feature traditional singers from all over the region, and jam sessions go on far into the night. Admission is free. The festivities end Sunday with a gospel sing in the Hermanson Center Lounge from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

For more information, call 637-1209 or visit www.AugustaHeritage.com.

The Purple Fiddle Coffeehouse and Mountain Market will celebrate Halloween with lots of entertainment this weekend. The fiddle will welcome The Accident That Led Me to the World, along with opening act Brooke Brown Saracino, at 8 p.m. today. Admission is $7.

On Friday, Justin Trawick will take the stage at 8:30 p.m. bringing an acoustic folk rock sound to the Fiddle crowd. Admission is $8.

The Shotgun Party will perform at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $7.
