Harr Reunion

November 15, 2008
The Inter-Mountain

The descendants of the late Frank and Caroline Kesner Harr of Canaan Valley hosted a reunion on Aug. 16 at the home of one of their great-granddaughters, Cheryl Bennett in Red Creek.

Early in the 1900s, Caroline Kesner, from Kline near Upper Tract, met Frank Harr at the Blackwater Hotel in Davis where she was working as a maid. He was born in Fairmont, and was working there as a bartender. He became a Canaan Valley farmer and also worked in the timber business as a foreman for many years.

On Aug. 14, some family members visited the Tygart Hotel in Elkins where Caroline Kesner and Frank Harr were married on May 6, 1908. The hotel, at 206-208 Davis Ave., was then called the Hotel Gassaway. The cornerstone of the seven-story building is clearly visible with the initials CH and JJ, 1906. It was built by Frank's brother, Charles Harr, and John Jenkins. These businessmen also operated the Blackwater Hotel which was located on William Avenue (Route 32) in Davis and was dismantled in the 1940s.
