The first major snow of the season has arrived. And with it comes poor driving conditions and school closings and delays across the region.
According to reports from the National Weather Service in Charleston, Elkins reported 2 inches of snow on the ground.
Roads in the area are snow covered with icy spots, according to the West Virginia Department of Transportation. U.S. 33 between Weston and Elkins is snow covered and the eastern portion of the highway has patches of ice.
At press time today, Randolph, Tucker, Upshur and Pocahontas counties called off school for the day; and Barbour, Lewis were operating on a two-hour delay. Across the state, 24 other counties canceled school or called a two-hour delay.
A winter storm warning is in effect until midnight tonight. Within the next six to 12 hours, an additional 1.5 inches of snow is expected.
