Upshur County BOE accepts bid for WDES roof project

By Gary Mallonee, Staff Writer
POSTED: October 29, 2009

The Upshur County Board of Education accepted the low bid for the roof replacement project at Washington District Elementary School during its meeting Tuesday.

According to Richard Malcolm, facilities/maintenance manager, the school system received a $180,000 grant from the School Building Authority that would require a 25 percent match by the board.

The low bid was submitted by Roof Services Inc. of Bridgeport for $189,400. Malcolm said since the project came in under budget the remaining money could be used to replace cross members and other roof areas in need of repair.

Work should begin on or about April 1, 2010, according to Malcolm.

The board also received reports from Tennerton Elementary School's Improvement Council and the Faculty Senate.

Sam Nolte, presented the Improvement Council, read the report aloud and updated the board members on reaching goals.

Status of achievement of the goals addressed in the strategic plan included the following:

n Students will achieve proficiency in reading and language arts.

n Students will achieve proficiency in math.

n Provide a safe and inviting climate conducive to learning.

n Learn through the use of technology.

Nolte listed several programs that are in place to encourage parent or community involvement and programs that encourage school volunteer programs and mentorship programs. Those programs include:

n Open house at the start of school.

n Volunteers for read-aloud, special projects and tutoring.

n Current partnership with Corhart, The Bookstore, Tennerton Lion's Club and Sam's Pizza.

n Multicultural activities.

n Opportunities to give - Giving Tree.

n Donations of food during the holidays.

n Technology - Whiteboards in every class room, data projectors are on order, and 40 new laptops to supplement the number of computers in classrooms.

In other business, the board:

- Conducted the second reading of revised Section V.11 of the Substance Abuse and Tobacco Control Policy. The third reading and possible approval will be at the Nov. 10 meeting.
