MATH?FIELD?DAY

October 30, 2009
The Inter-Mountain

Students from Highland Adventist School in Elkins recently participated in a regional math field day. The daylong event involved students in various levels of math problem solving, math computation drills and application of mathematics principles. One activity involved integrating math and science as the students used three sheets of paper, a short piece of string, three straws, some tape, and a few toothpicks to design a container to protect a raw egg on a 25-foot drop to pavement. Of the 34 teams that entered egg containers in the contest, only three had eggs that survived. Two of those three teams included students from Highland Adventist School, above, from left, Joel Grey, Scott Wentz and Lauren Spears. Several HAS students were also recognized for high achievement in math computation drills and in math problem solving. Below left, eighth-grader Annie Fleming displays one of the awards she received for high achievement in math computation. Below right, middle school students Hannah Frasure and Megan Bennett team up to work on math word problems.
