Pictures make fantastic gifts, but the gift is not complete without adding a picture frame. The frame is the icing on the cake. A nice framing job can turn a simple snapshot into a family heirloom.
Frames range from very small, wallet size to massive wall portrait sizes and everywhere in between. Frames can be very simple or very elaborate which of course means inexpensive to very valuable.
When it comes to picture frames, you have basically two types - off the shelf frames and custom picture framing.
Off the shelf framing is as easy as it sounds. Just grab a frame, slip in the photo and you've got a great quick and easy gift.
Custom framing on the other hand gets a little more complicated, but the end result of the effort is well worth it. With custom framing you choose the framing material, including frame type, the matting and even the glass. Frame moldings come in uncountable profile shapes and colors and can be made of wood, metal or plastic and the matte boards come in every color of the rainbow. So you are going to have lots of choices to make or if you want to do it the easy way just leave it up to your framing professionals discretion.
Sure it's a little more complicated, but we all know that the best gifts take a bit of planning ahead. That is the reason I'm writing today's column. If you are thinking of giving a custom framed item as a gift, now is the time to get it done. Since it's the holiday season, and you may not be the only one to get this brilliant idea, frame shops will be backed up with orders. And since custom framing is, custom, it can take some time to order the materials for your framing job and also to assemble it professionally.
Something you may not know is that one of the many things we do at Foto 1 is custom framing. We specialize in framing photography, but have been known to frame other pieces of art as well. We also try to carry a nice stock of off the shelf frames.
Framed pictures are an awesome gift since people generally hang onto them for years and lots are handed down through the family and often become even more valuable to future generations.
