Roger G. Fussell, 70, of Route 1, Box 4, Huttonsville, departed this life Dec. 21, 2009, in Community Hospice House in Vidalia, Ga., after an extended illness.
He was born April 26, 1939, in Jeff Davis County, Ga., to the late Joe Brown "J.B." Fussell and Eunice I. Stokes Fussell.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 23 years, Fae Mobley Fussell, who passed away Oct. 3, 1987; and a brother, Maynard D. Fussell.
Mr. Fussell graduated from Bacon County High School in Alma, Ga., on May 31, 1956. He then entered the U.S. Air Force where he was a jet engine mechanic from 1956 until his honorable discharge in 1960. He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va., in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and was certified as a Certified Public Accountant that same year. He began his own accounting practice in Elkins in August 1973 which he ran until his death. He was also owner and operator of two motels; one in Elkins and one in Davis. Mr. Fussell was a well known farmer in the Randolph County area where he ran a cow-calf operation with mainly registered Charlois and Black Angus beef cattle. He was a member of the West Virginia Farm Bureau, the West Virginia Cattlemen's Association and a member of the West Virginia and Virginia Society of CPAs. He was also a member of the Randolph County Landlords Association; he was a life member of the Morocco Shriners, Jacksonville, Fla., and also a member of the Grand Lodge of Georgia, Bacon Masonic Lodge No. 56, A.F. & A.M. Alma, Ga.
He is survived by his wife, Joann Turner Fussell, who he married May 20, 2000.
In addition, he is survived by one brother, Jesse Fussell in Arizona; two sisters, Mrs. T. H. Brewer (Kathleen) of Lumber City, Ga., and Mrs. Junior Bracewell (Peggy) of Baxley, Ga.; and three daughters, Mrs. Eugene Simmons (Andrea) of Lake City, Fla., Mrs. Micheal Fortney (Kristi) of Petersburg and Mrs. Charles Collette (Chanda) of Elkins. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Amanda Simmons, Nicholas Simmons, Hope Collins, Mekayla Fortney, Austin Fortney and Vanessa Collette.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Crosby Funeral Home in Alma, Ga., with Chaplain Dewitt Corbin officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Lawn Cemetery in Alma, Ga., with military honors and Masonic graveside services. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.
Active pallbearers will be Eugene Simmons, Michael Fortney, Charles Collette, Richard Turner, David Turner and Nicholas Simmons. All others in attendance will be considered honorary escorts.
