Joe and Nell Tekel celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 25 at their home on Maple Lane off of Chenoweth Creek Road in Elkins where they have lived for the past 40 years.
The couple met in Big Stone Gap, Va. They were married there on June 25, 1960.
Mr. Tekel was forester with the U.S. Forest Service on the Jefferson National Forest.

Mrs. Tekel was a teacher at Powell Valley High School in Big Stone Gap, Va.
They moved to Petersburg in 1964 where Mr. Tekel served as district ranger on the Potomac Ranger District, Monongahela National Forest for six years before being transferred to the Forest Service Office in Elkins as a recreation specialist.
Mrs. Tekel was a substitute teacher in Petersburg and Elkins for many years.
The couple retired in 1987 and decided to stay in Elkins.
They have one daughter, Paula Tekel Grigsby, and son, in-law Bruce Grigsby of Wellston, Ohio. They also have two grandchildren, Makala and Toby.
