The Elkins City Police Department wants to warn residents that the next time the phone rings, it could be a scam.
According to Chief Rob White, his office usually receives one or two calls regarding phone scams every other week. Friday, however, White said more than five calls came into his department saying someone had attempted to gain credit or debit card information.
"We want to warn people not to give anyone personal information over the phone," White said Friday.
While it is unclear if it is one person or group of people making these types of calls or multiple people, White said their main purpose remains the same. Calls from an individual claiming to have notices of possible stolen card numbers or needing information to deliver a prize should be particularly suspicious. White said that some calls have even given individuals partial numbers.
"Folks should be highly aware that there are people out there wanting to take your money," White said.
If contacted by one of these scammers, notify the office of the West Virginia Attorney General at 800-368-8808.
