Fresh sea food in the hills of the West Virginia? That was the first question that went through my mind when I first saw the sign at The Golden Anchor Restaurant near Canaan Valley.
Located on a picturesque mountain homestead at the southern edge of Canaan Valley, The Golden Anchor Restaurant was elegantly crafted from a barn on the Feaster Wolford Farm.
The venture has been a "labor of love" for owners Ron and Rella Cvetican. During the renovation process, the original hickory boards of the barn were carefully removed, planed and replaced on the interior of the restaurant, which helps to create the warm and friendly atmosphere which is present throughout.

"We serve fresh seafood in the middle of the mountains," Ron Cvetican said. "We have 22 years of experience cooking it and we've had the same staff from almost day one. We're proud to have that kind of relationship with our folks, they love us and we love them."
When the restaurant first opened, Ron Cvetican drove twice a week to Baltimore to purchase fresh seafood. As time went on, he developed a network of delivery drivers and now he gets it brought to him.
While The Golden Anchor specializes in seafood, it also offers a full menu including steak, chicken and pasta and a kids menu. The restaurant also offers a fully stocked bar.
For dinner, I enjoyed the seafood platter and topped off the meal with carmel rolled ice cream for dessert. It was decadent. The house Merlot was also terrific.
"It's a fairly easy drive and the scenery is beautiful," Rella Cvetican said. "We are just 30 minutes from Elkins and we are definitely worth the drive. Once they get here, they will find the food is excellent. We're also close enough that folks can get home in case of an emergency."
To complement the restaurant, the Cveticans constructed six honeymoon cabins on a secluded property beside the restaurant. They started with three cabins in 2002 and built a couple more in 2006 and then another in 2009.
"Our honeymoon cabins are extremely popular," Ron Cvetican said. "The people are in love and this is a beautiful place. It really enhances the entire wedding experience."
The Cveticans were nice enough to provide me with the Honeymoon Royale Cabin. Honestly, it was one of the nicest places I've ever stayed.
"We have quite a few people who make it their tradition to come back on their anniversary," Ron Cvetican said. "We've had men propose to their ladies at the restaurant, they get engaged, get married here, they stay at the honeymoon cabin, they come back and celebrate their anniversary, then later they come back and rent the family cabin."
While staying in the cabins at The Golden Anchor, guests may want to take advantage of the multitude of outdoor activities. Many hiking and biking trails are located in the area for summer fun, and several ski resorts cater to the winter enthusiasts. Other popular destinations include Blackwater Falls and Seneca Rocks.
"This area is known for outdoor activities," Ron Cvetican said. "Folks who are looking for museums, theaters or shopping, they may want to consider another place. Here it's hiking, biking, horseback riding, golf, tennis and skiing, when it's appropriate. We have three beautiful ski areas; Timberline, Canaan and White Grass for cross country. Most of the folks who come here are outdoors-oriented."
"We are in the heart of everything," Ron Cvetican said. "We are strategically located so people can enjoy all these things within a short drive.
