A 529 is ‘smart’

Saving now will help when it’s time to pay

By CARRA HIGGINS Staff Writer

In West Virginia, parents, grandparents or other relatives can start saving for a child's future with as little as $50.

The West Virginia SMART529 Savings Plan, a program of the board of trustees of the West Virginia College Prepaid Tuition Program office, is an investment plan that accumulates earnings tax-free. Distribution of the money is also tax-exempt if the money is used to pay eligible education expenses, including tuition, a computer, books, and room and board. Accumulated monies can be used by an individual attending an accredited college or university or a trade school.

To open an account, an adult may decide to invest in the SMART529 program directly or through a financial investment professional with The Hartford SMART529. Members of the board of trustees chose Hartford Life Insurance Company to provide program management services for SMART529.

Direct investments may be made by visiting www.smart529.com and select the Open an Account button. Consulting a financial investment professional can give an individual advice on The Hartford SMART 529 plan.
