Satisfy your need for speed

For three weekends last fall, Mountaineer Kart Way (MKW) had a premier opening to allow guests to take a test drive and get an idea of what will be coming this spring to the tracks. Now, the wait is almost over - this Saturday, practice races will occur for Flat Kart drivers along with rental kart practice sessions.

According to MKW's owner Scott Smith, MKW currently has the only asphalt track in West Virginia. The oval track is an eighth of a mile course. It stretches 27 feet wide in the straights with 2 degrees of banking. The 30-foot-wide turns have banking of 5.7 degrees. Each race can have up to six karts at a time, and drivers can make a lap around the track within 12 seconds.

Mountaineer Kart Way has a variety of packages for racing. For $10 participants can race for 12 laps on an eighth of a mile course. The more people in a racing party, the lower the cost. Each participant must be at least 57 inches tall to drive.

Once MKW is open, a MKW Race Series will be conducted at 2 p.m. every Saturday, if weather permits. The race will include go kart racers from throughout the area and surrounding states who will compete on the track.

"This is just the beginning of what we have planned," Smith said. "We won a bid for football stadium lights that we will be using for the track so races can occur at night. We will eventually build a center tower in the middle of the track. Lights will be on top, along with cameras for videos and pictures. Eventually we hope to get our videos on YouTube and our website"

Smith also hopes to open Laser Skirmish by the end of spring. Laser Skirmish is very similar to paintball, with similar rules, just without the bruises. The different laser tag games include: basic tag/elimination, capture the flag, paintball style, protect the president, medic and attack and defend.

The games will take place on a two-acre outdoor arena that includes a wooded area with barriers. It is different from regular indoor laser tag in that the technology enables players to use the equipment in daylight without any interference caused by sunlight or artificial lighting.

Each person will be able to test his or her shooting skills with a range from 200-300 feet. The cost for one session of laser tag is $7 per person. There also is a $25 package that includes an hour and a half session and up to a variety of eight games that are considered to be classic laser tag challenges.

The goal for the $25 package is to play two games of elimination, two games of protect the president, two games of capture the flag and two games of medic. A point will be given to the team that wins each game. After the final score is tallied and the winning team is declared, the players will play a free for all, if time permits.

Participants must be 8 years of age or older to play.

According to Smith, future plans for MKW may include a mud bog available by the end of summer for ATV drivers.

Mountaineer Kart Way and Laser Skirmish WV is located about a mile and a half from the intersection by McDonalds on U.S. 33 east toward Harman across from Isner Creek Road.

Reservations for special events and birthday parties are available with different packages for these events..
