Orchestra receives donation of violins

Members of the Highland String Orchestra in Elkins recently received a donation of three new violins. The string group, which provides string instruction and performance opportunities for students in the Elkins area, is under the direction of Becca Jacko. So many beginning students have joined the orchestra program this year that the orchestra has loaned out all of its instruments to students. The three new instruments, which were donated by the "For the Love of Music" ministry which is located in Atlanta, Georgia, and is operated by Herman and Sonny Harp, are already in use by students.

"I read about this organization on-line," states Cheryl Jacko, principal of Highland Adventist School which sponsors the orchestra. "Information about the ministry states that its goal is to 'provide instruments for needy kids and schools.' We are surely in need of instruments, so I contacted them and was thrilled to receive some brand new violins as a result."

The orchestra practices weekly and performs several times during the school year. The program provides group instruction in violin, viola, bass violin and cello and is open to any student in the local area. It also provides free loan of instruments to members, when available. There is currently no charge for orchestra membership.

For more information about membership in Highland String Orchestra, or on how to donate an instrument for student use, call Highland Adventist School at 304-636-4274.
