Valley Vibes:?Landscaping for pollinators

June 17, 2011
The Inter-Mountain

Why is pollination important? Pollinators are responsible for much of our food source, a number of medicines and textiles. In recent years, populations of pollinators have experienced a mysterious decline. What can we do to encourage the overall health of native pollinators like bumblebees, butterflies, moths, ants and others?

Montgomery County, Maryland, Master Gardener and West Virginia Master Naturalist Paula Jean Hallberg will present this program on Saturday at Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. She'll offer practical ideas on the "why, where, and how" of creating safe havens for these most useful creatures. Topics will include landscaping and design for creating habitats and shelter; use of native plants to attract particular species; and phasing of planting to achieve a year-round haven for pollinators.

Light refreshments are provided. The event is free.
