Orthopedic Learning Center to visit Lewis County July 25

Area residents will have an opportunity to learn more about the ever-changing world of orthopedic surgery when the Zimmer Mobile Learning Center makes a visit from 9 a.m. to noon July 25 at the offices of Stonewall Jackson Home Care and Stonewall Home Oxygen Therapy at Market Place in Weston. People who have medical issues can find information about treatment options for joint pain, joint replacement surgery and other advancements in technology when they visit the center.

The Zimmer Mobile Learning Center is an 18-wheel bus that takes a route through the United States each year. The expandable Mobile Learning Center houses a self-supporting training/educational facility that's used to promote new products, conduct hands-on training and provide educational programs.

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, one in seven Americans has an orthopedic impairment, and orthopedic complaints are the most common reason for seeking medical care. "In reality, no one looks forward to seeing the doctor, so people put it off - month to month, or indefinitely," a spokesperson said.

The learning center provides patients with an opportunity to learn more about various procedures in their own comfort zone. Some patients may have joint issues but haven't made up their minds as to how they will deal with their discomfort.

When opened, the Mobile Learning Center offers a room approximately 15 feet by 28 feet, complete with audio/visual equipment, seating for 50, four pull-down workstations, backlit display frames and a complement of display products and workshop equipment. There's also a smaller room that can be closed off from the main area and used for private conferences.

In 1996, the Zimmer Mobile Learning Center, previously a product and surgical supply hauler, was transformed into a hands-on training vehicle for doctors, nurses and technicians. It has been to every state in the continental U.S., made 200 stops and seen more than 13,000 visitors.

Staff of Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital will be able to visit the Learning Center from 1 - 4 p.m. the same day in the parking lot of SJMH.
