The Barbour County CROP Hunger Walk committee is asking residents to do their part on Oct. 2 by volunteering, sponsoring a walker or organizing a group to raise funds to help stop hunger and poverty in the community and around the world.
Last year, more than 50 walkers raised almost $6,000 in this locally organized CROP Hunger Walk. CROP Hunger Walk funds benefit the overall work and ministry of Church World Service - working around the world to help those in need help themselves through refugee assistance, self-help development programs, advocacy and disaster relief. The afternoon of CROP walking will help families in Kenya tap into new sources of clean water, assist refugees from Burma as they struggle to survive in camps along the Thai/Burma border, enable families in Guatemala to grow more and better food, and assist communities in the United States that are working to recover from storm damage. In addition, 25 percent of what is raised will go to support local nutrition programs at the Barbour County Senior Center and the food pantry at Heart and Hand House Inc.
Walk day registration begins at 1:30 p.m. in front of Philippi Baptist Church. Walkers will leave the courthouse at 2 p.m. and follow a three-mile course through north Philippi and back to the courthouse. Light refreshments will be provided at the conclusion of the walk. Certificates of recognition will be presented to all groups that participate, with special certificates of recognition presented to the group with the most walkers and the group raising the most money.
Anyone who can't join the walk on that day or those who just want to broaden the horizon of sponsors may "Walk on the Web." Visit cropwalkonline.org to find out how.
