Kathryn Kahler, RN, MSN, FNP-C, recently joined the medical staff at DirectCare of Parsons as a certified family nurse practitioner.
"We are extremely pleased to have someone with both Kahler's experience and education become part of our staff," Dr. Elaine Moore of DirectCare said. "She will be a real asset to our very community-oriented team."
"When I first met the staff at DirectCare I was impressed with how friendly and knowledgeable they all were," Kahler said. "I also noticed how they treat each patient with respect and kindness, which is very important to me."
Her experience working in rural communities includes serving as family nurse practitioner at the Rural Health Outreach Program/Blue Ridge Medical Center in Lovingston, Va., and her employment with the Mount Edgecumbe Hospital/Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium in Sitka, Alaska, where she provided primary and urgent care for all ages.
In Alaska, she served primarily Native Alaskans in an area that spanned nearly 35,000 square miles.
"I am one of those people who always looks for the least populated area to live," she said.
While the Potomac Highlands may have a higher population, there is still that special attraction.
"When my family and I came back from Alaska we chose this area for its cool climate and location deep in the Appalachian Mountains," she said.
For Kahler, there is something very attractive about rural medicine as well.
"I like hearing my patients talk about their farms and animals, and the kind of work they do," she said. "I grew up in a rural setting and it feels more like home when I work in a rural clinic."
Kahler earned her Master of Science in nursing from the University of Virginia in its family nurse practitioner program. She also received her Bachelor of Science from UVA.
