Habitat for Humanity in Upshur County is gearing up for another big year in 2012.
Habitat volunteers hope to construct two homes this year on property purchased in the Vicksburg area.
Habitat's founder, Millard Fuller, declared that in Habitat's ministry, "the only thing given away is opportunity."
The standard no-profit, interest-free mortgage is certainly a great benefit. But a central component in the program is that any homeowners-to-be must work. They are expected to put in several hundred hours of labor on their own home.
The "sweat equity" is a piece of the puzzle that helps keep costs lower and gives the prospective homeowners a sense of pride in their home.
The Buckhannon River Habitat for Humanity group meets at 7 p.m. the first Monday of each month at the Upshur Cooperative Parish House, located at 68 College Ave., in Buckhannon.
Habitat always welcomes volunteers, specialized skills and donations for the construction of homes.
