Statewide event promotes healthy living

Shuffling toward fitness

Instead of spending part of the day at their desks, Randolph County elementary school students danced and shuffled Thursday as part of a statewide Physical Activity Day.

More than 70,000 students at about 230 public schools in West Virginia simultaneously performed the "Cupid Shuffle" hip-hop line dance at 1 p.m. Thursday - including local students at Jennings Randolph and Third Ward elementary schools.

The event was part of the West Virginia Department of Education's Let's Move! West Virginia Active Schools project and the national Let's Move! campaign to raise a generation of healthier kids.

"We realize with the Let's Move! campaign that everyone is trying to get involved," JRES physical education teacher David Baird said. "Any extra activity during this time of the year is good for them (the students)."

Students and teachers at JRES and TWES lined up in their gymnasiums and performed the popular dance.

"We collaborated with the music class to help teach the students the beat and the song," Baird said. "We have been using DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) and Just Dance to help teach the students to dance."

TWES Principal Debbie Schmidlen said her students also were excited to participate in the statewide initiative.

"Our physical education teacher has been teaching the 'Cupid Shuffle' to the kids for the last couple weeks," she said. "We did it all at the same time, 320 kids and 30 staff. Even the little pre-schoolers did the shuffle."
