90th birthday

Maurice Law Allman will celebrate his 90th birthday on Feb. 12 with his family.

Mr. Allman was born on Feb. 12, 1922, to John I. and Reta B. (Law) Allman of the Berlin area near Jane Lew. He graduated from Jane Lew High School in 1941 where his father John I Allman served as principal. Mr. Allman attended one year at West Virginia Business College in Clarksburg, using a 4-H scholarship.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Oct. 15, 1942. He served for two and a half years during World War II at various locations including Cincinnati as typist, and then entered general service as an infantryman in Europe where he saw, Le Havre, France and Germany. After V-E Day, because Allman could type and edit, he was stationed in Bad Nauheim, head quarters of Gen. George Patton, who was assigned the task of writing the history of the war in Europe.

After returning to West Virginia, Mr. Allman attended college at Potomac State College and West Virginia University graduating with a Bachelors of Science degree in agriculture in 1950.

On Sept. 3, 1950 Mr. Allman married Bertha Lee Wood from Mingo.

Mr. Allman was employed by various Conservation Districts for 33 years, serving in Doddridge, Gilmer, Lewis and Barbour counties. After retiring in 1983, Mr. Allman stayed active by volunteering in various public service endeavors, which included Allegheny Mountain Wool Co-op, Hackers Creek Pioneers' Descendants, Stonewall Jackson Dam State Park Foundation, Corridor H Committee, Barbour County Industrial Authority, University Extension Office, Barbour County Fairgrounds/Park, Philippi Heart and Hand, and Tygarts Valley Conservation Supervisors. Mr. Allman is an active member of Crim Memorial United Methodist Church.

The Allmans have two daughters, Pamela R. Allman Corathers, her husband, the late Robert H Corathers, and Elaine C. Allman Coulter, and her husband, Commodore Coulter III of Junior. They also have four grandchildren, Julie R. Smith Warsinskey, and her husband, Justin, Grayson H. Smith, Laura E. Corathers and Jennifer S. Corathers.
