MORGANTOWN Shelly Poe, a member of the sports athletic staff at Ohio State University for five years, is heading south.
She has accepted a position at Auburn University as assistant athletic director of football communications. Athletic Director Jay Jacobs hired her effective March 21.
"I am excited and looking forward to making the move," Poe said. "I enjoyed being interviewed down there for that position.
A 1985 graduate of West Virginia University, she joined the Mountaineer sports publicity staff that year and became full-time sports information director in 1988.
Poe started writing about ports while attending University High School. She covered girls' basketball games as a part-time basis for The Dominion Post and living in Morgantown.
She left WVU as SID in 2008 to accept the position as director of football information at Ohio State.
Poe was inducted into the College Sports Information Directors of America Association (CoSida) Hall of Fame in 2002. She also is a past president of the National Collegiate Writers Association.
Poe graduated with honors from WVU's Perley Issac Reed School of Journalism. As WVU sports information director, she spent time each spring helping the school conduct contests for perspective SJ students. She spent most of her adult life in the Morgantown area.
"When I went down for the interview, I met Auburn football coach Geno Chizik, and he told me that he was a graduate assistant on the Clemson University coaching staff in 1989," Poe said.
"So he remembers that Clemson defeated West Virginia (27-7) in the Gator Bowl. That was Major Harris's last game as WVU quarterback."
Poe's parents, Ned and Judy, still live in Fairmont.
