With almost every player returning from last year's roster, Moorefield coach Tim Crites is excited to get the 2012 campaign under way.

The Lady Yellow Jackets, who finished 23-9 last season, lost to region champion East Hardy in the sectional title game last season.

"We lost to a very good East Hardy team in last year's sectionals," Crites said. "It's unfortunate that both of us are in the same section, because I think we had a good enough team to make it a long way."

Moorefield’s Taylor Zuber will return as one of the Lady Yellow Jackets’ top players in 2012.

Moorefield will return four starting pitchers this season including Danica Rogers, Beth Cook, Taylor Zuber and Shayna Vetter.

"I'm very excited with our pitching staff for this season," Crites said. "This is the strongest we will be in that department in a long time, which is a plus. I'm very confident in all four of our girls that are going to pitch for us this season."

Also returning will be left fielder Jayme Fraley, center fielder McKenzie Weese, infielder Michaela Regester, first baseman Brooke Shockey and catcher Katelyn Wills.

"This is the strongest that we have been in a long time," Crites said. "All of the girls we return have plenty of experience and talent. Hopefully they can continue to pick up where they left off last year."

Crites also mentioned that there are some younger girls who will be contributing this season. Those youngsters include several sophomores players and freshmen.

"We've got 23 girls this year between junior varsity and varsity," Crites said. "We've got a lot of younger girls with potential, so the future looks really bright for us.

"But some of the younger kids are going to have to step up and contribute for us this season."

Moorefield will play in two competitive tournaments this season.

The Lady Yellow Jackets will play in the Best of the Best tournament at Buffalo, and will host the Bub Riggleman tourney."

"The Best of the Best tournament has a lot of good Class A teams in it," Crites said. "Most of the squads in it will likely be playing in the state tournament at the end of the season.

"During the Bub Riggleman tournament, we will have 12 teams come in and play. There will be a mixture of Class A, Class AA and Class AAA teams from all over the state in the tourney."

Moorefield will entertain Berkeley Springs on March 15 in its season opener.

After its first contest, the Lady Yellow Jackets will travel to Frankfort before squaring off at home against rival East Hardy on March 20.

"We always want to play the toughest schedule we can every season," Crites said. "We have put together a very competitive schedule this season and we are looking forward to getting started.

"We want to play as many good teams as we can, because that's the only way we're going to get better as a team."
