Growth rings

The Inter-Mountain

Signs that the wood products industry may be looking up were evidenced this week in Randolph County when Armstrong World Industries announced it is recalling the more than 100 employees who were laid off in November. As another plus, even more workers may be added to the company's line.

Not only is this good news for the workers and their families, but also for our area's other businesses and community in general. Obviously, more money in the pockets of our residents means additional dollars are likely to flow through the local economy.

Looking beyond the surface, though, reveals something that may have more long-term payoffs. Armstrong's decision to bring back the employees to the Beverly facility shows a confidence in our local workforce, their skills and their work ethic. That confidence is something other companies look for when considering whether to expand or relocate.

The real good news here is the strong effort of our local workers that sends the "can do" message.
