Volunteers requested for Weston Walk/Run

With less then two weeks to go, organizers of the Weston 5K Run and Wellness Walk are pleased with the interest in the event to be held April 21.

The start of the race will be at 10 a.m. that day at the corner of West Second and Center Avenue in Weston. There also will be a Wee Run for children 10 years of age and under, which begins at 11 a.m. that day. The Wee Run course will be from East Second Street to First Street on Court Avenue.

"We will have traffic control but want to remind residents that some of the streets will be closed to traffic that day as a safety measure for our participants. As of March 29, 50 runners and walkers had signed up for the 3.1 miles event. The route has also been finalized, with entrants traveling on Center and Court Avenues, as well as River Avenue for the majority of the race," said co-coordinator John Weber.

"We can register people the day of the race, but we hope that people who are participating can be registered by April 13, to ensure that they receive a T-shirt that day. We will have extra shirts but we want to get as many of the shirts in the correct sizes ready for the participants."

Since the course will be winding through several Weston neighborhoods, organizers are recruiting neighborhood residents as guides for the race.

"When looking at the course, it occurred to me that people in the neighborhoods could provide directions at the appropriate turns on the course," said co-chair Julia Spelsberg. "I have contacted residents who live at the turns and they have agreed to be out on the street and guide the runners and walkers. I have several more people to contact, but it will really make this race a nice, neighborly event. Showing off the hospitality of our residents will be a nice outcome for Weston."

The race is a cooperative effort by Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Saint Patrick School and the city of Weston. Corporate sponsors are WVRW 107.7 FM AND WOTR 96.3 FM Radio and WDTV. Cost for the race is $10 pre-registration, and $12 the day of the race.

Registration forms can be found at, on the lower right of the opening page.
