Methodist Revival set in Tucker County

April 21, 2012
The Inter-Mountain

The Tucker County United Methodist Parish will host a series of revival events that will review the Methodist Church's roots in Appalachia.

The events will focus on the area's historical legacy of circuit riders, who were Methodist missionaries who traveled through the region's rugged landscapes spreading the Gospel.

Dr. Lawrence Sherwood, considered by many to be an appalachian circuit rider expert, will speak at the revival's opening event Wednesday.

Sherwood is known by many for his book "The Tours of Bishop Francis Asbury in West Virginia, 1776-1885."

The book includes a historical introduction to Asbury and the writings he penned during his travels as a circuit rider.

The revival will continue throughout the week at the following times and locations:

7 p.m. Wednesday - Davis United Methodist Church, message by VJ Davis, with special guests Dallas Forren and Sherwood.

7 p.m. Thursday - St. John's United Methodist Church, Parsons, Message by Mike Ray.

7 p.m. Friday - St Paul's United Methodist Church, Parsons, Message by Suzie Metzner, with a healing and special needs service.

7 p.m. April 28 - First United Methodist Church, Parsons, with a celebration of young Methodists and a message by Justin Jones and Matthew Hottle (All youth invited for pizza at 6 p.m.)
