Tee Time

Pick a Shorter Target: I remember back some 26 years ago when I was playing collegiate golf at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio and what my golf coach, Bill Whetsell always told me when I was not hitting my drives straight. It's a tip that I use almost every time I give a lesson.

Coach Whetsell always told me to pick out a target that I knew that no matter how bad I hit it I could get the ball to that point. Generally he would tell me this on the 5th hole at Marietta Country Club.

The 5th hole at MCC was not a long hole and I always seemed to want to slug off the tee, cut the corner and drive the green. However, I generally would have just sliced or hooked my tee ball badly.

So Coach Whetsell wanted me to take a FULL SWING like all the farther I wanted to hit the tee shot was to the 150 yard marker (which was about 210 yards off the tee).

What would happen is I would take a swing that was in proper tempo and hit it a great distance past the 150 yard marker that was my "target" and also hit it straight. Basically you trick your brain into making a smooth, in tempo swing that generally results in longer straighter shot that you had hoped for.

Tee Time Tip of the Week: Pick a Shorter Target and take a FULL Swing with the thought in mind that all the farther you want to hit the ball is that shorter target. The results will amaze you.
