June events set at Adaland Mansion

Adaland Mansion Executive Director Ann Serafin said June is a time of family celebrations, particularly the June 17 Father's Day barbecue event and the June 20 West Virginia Day Celebration.

The Father's Day barbecue will be catered especially for Adaland Mansion by Buckhannon chef Walter Wagner, of Walker Redds. The menu will feature slow-cooked and lightly-smoked baby back pork ribs and baked Italian chicken quarters. Walker Redds' green bean specialty and baked beans, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes and gravy, deluxe garden salad, dinner rolls, cobblers and ice cream round out the afternoon's hearty meal.

Also that day, a weaving demonstration is set at noon in the barn, and a Father's Day storytime at 2:30 p.m. on the pavilion.

Activities for children and their parents plus a West Virginia-inspired dinner will highlight the birthday party for West Virginia on June 20, beginning at 2 p.m. on the pavilion. A range of activities are set, such as face painting, origami and a birthday cake to celebrate the state's 149th birthday. The pavilion activities, co-sponsored by Philippi Convention and Visitors Bureau and Philippi Main Street, are all free and open to the public.

The 6 p.m. dinner will feature foods prepared by Adaland's well-known cook, Lucy Williamson. Guests will find a buffet with country ham, baked chicken, brown beans and browned potatoes, seasoned greens, cole slaw, Lucy's famous homemade breads, pies and cakes.
