As part of Weston's Amazing Week, organizers have scheduled a pet blessing at 6 p.m. today at Saint Patrick Church on the corner of East Second Street and Center Avenue in Weston.
This year, Lewis County Girl Scouts will coordinate the event. The girls will prepare treats for the dogs and cats participating in the blessing.
"We are so happy to have the Girl Scouts working with us this year," said Fairs and Festivals member Julia Spelsberg. "This is a perfect project for the girls, and we are delighted to have them on board."
To ensure the safety of the pets and people who are present, the animals must be on a leash or in a crate/cage.
Blessing of the animal events have been celebrated since the 13th century. It is a way for humans to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, embodying his love of animals and of all mankind. St. Francis is the patron saint of all animals and the environment, and he was born in 1182 or 1181 and founded the Franciscan order. He also wrote the Canticle of the Creatures. Often he referred to animals as the brothers and sisters to mankind.
