Health screenings are an important ingredient for a healthy life. Stonewall Resort and Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital (SJMH) are joining forces to provide health screenings for local residents, resort employees and guests on July 12 at the Resort Lodge during the Community Health and Wellness Fair. All of the screenings are free and open to the public. The Fair will be from 8 a.m. to noon.
From 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., members of SJMH's Cardiac Rehabilitation Department will provide free cholesterol screenings for participants. Those who wish to have this screening should fast for 12 hours. This is also true for those wishing to have the blood glucose testing.
There is a good reason for testing cholesterol. The higher your blood cholesterol level, the greater the chance of developing heart disease. The American Heart Association indicates that all adults age 20 and older should have a fasting lipoprotein profile completed that measures total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides once every five years. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer for both men and women in the United States.
Other screenings which will be available that day include blood glucose, hearing screenings and bone density. There also will be information on tobacco cessation, living wills and medical powers of attorney, healthy skin care, injury prevention and safety.
