Buckhannon Post 7 continued their recent slide Monday night, falling 12-2 to perennial state power Morgantown Post 2. The game was played at Morgantown's Hawley Field, the home venue for West Virginia University as well Post 2.
Morgantown jumped out of the gate's early, scoring two runs in the first inning and four more in the bottom of the second for a quick 6-0 advantage. Buckhannon pitcher Dalton Westfall settled down in the middle innings, but the Post 7 offense could not get them back in the game. It was the third consecutive game that Buckhannon could only generate three total hits as a team.
Buckhannon scored a single run on the fourth as Logan Moneypenny crossed on a wild pitch. They added their second tally in the seventh with Tyler Wood scoring from third on a delayed double steal.
Wood's double would be the only Buckhannon extra base hit on the evening with Moneypenny and Westfall adding singles.
"We came out with a little more life tonight than we did on Saturday against Clarksburg," Buckhannon manager Steve Gandee said. "We just could not get more hits to fall, and we were facing a very good team."
Leadoff man Trey Shreve led the Morgantown offense with a pair of triples, with Brandon Wiseman recording two hits including a double. Scott McLaughlin delivered a two-run double in the eighth to extend the lead to ten runs and end the contest early. Morgantown starter Zach Spoldt pitched the first seven innings to record the victory, allowing only two hits during his stint on the mound.
Buckhannon falls to 8-14 with the loss. They hit the road again on Wednesday night, traveling to Elkins to face Post 29 in an area game.
