Elkins opens campaign with win

Tigers earn conference victory over Polar Bears

Alex Baird and Braden Hammond both shot a 40 to lead Elkins past Fairmont Senior in a Big 10 Conference dual match Wednesday at the Elks Country Club.

Elkins shot a 163 to down Fairmont Senior, which carded a 176 for the day.

Kollin Hopwood shot a 41 for the Tigers (1-0), while Kelsi Trippett and Remington Knight both hit 42s.

Fairmont Senior's Bailey Mohr shot a 37 and earned low-medalist honors.

Sterling Fitzwater (39), Gage Hannah (42), Joel Garcia (58) and Logan Atan (64) followed Mohr.

"It was nice to get the first win of the season," Elkins coach Dave Baird said. "I thought we played well for our first match and hopefully it will continue into our next one on Monday."

Elkins travels to Bridgeport on Monday to compete in the Pete Dye Invitational against 30 other high school teams.
