Ellkins’ James Gainer delivers a pitch against Brooklawn (N.J.) Thursday in opening round action of the Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament in West Lawn, Pa. Post 29 dropped a 6-2 decision in the contest.

Giovani Gussen had a two-run single to lead the charge for Brooklawn in the eighth. Elliott McCummings and Rob Aleesandrine added run-producing singles in the set.

"I was pleased that our kids hung with one of the best teams in the country for eight innings," Elkins general manager Chris George said. "Brooklawn has a great baseball team."

Post 72 jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Pat Kane singled and later scored on a Joe Brooks groundout.

Brooklawn (51-3) extended its lead to 2-0 in the second inning when Gussen walked and scored one out later on an Elkins error, which was Post 29's third miscue through the first two innings of play.

"We had some costly errors in the first couple of innings," George said. "You have to play almost perfect baseball against a team the caliber of Brooklawn. Our defense didn't do that in the early stages of the game."

Elkins battled back and knotted things up with two runs in the sixth inning as Cody Gainer delivered a two-run single.

"We battled back to tie things up and had a chance to put so more runs up in the eighth," George said. "But we couldn't cash in on our opportunities."

James Gainer took the loss for Post 29 in three innings of relief work. He surrendered four runs on four hits.

Scott Fox started the game and pitched five strong innings. Fox scattered just four hits and fanned five batters.

"Scott pitched really well," George said. "His arm started bothering him so he had to take him out. He was doing a good job of shutting Brooklawn down when he was in there, though."

Tyler Shreve and Heath Broughton both hit doubles for Elkins.

Cody Brown (9-0) earned the win for Brooklawn in eight innings pitched. He surrendered six hits, struck out eight and walked two.

Alessandribe finished with three hits for Post 72.
