The city of Belington recently has experienced something of an unusual nature that's either a sign of the economic times or a lifestyle throwback from days gone by.
Last week, City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance that prohibits unauthorized camping on public and private property after residents filed a number of nuisance complaints. Apparently, people are parking their personal campers within the city limits and attempting to make that their temporary residence.
Mayor Jody Haller told council that the issue has to be regulated, and we agree.
There are sites throughout the area designated for camping and many of them offer utility hook-ups. However, setting up camp in places not equipped for that can present health and safety issues. In addition, it doesn't do much for the looks of the town.
Council will address the second reading of the ordinance next week, hopefully putting an end to what's been an ongoing problem.
