Doctor prescribes Week 1 predictions

August 24, 2012
Dr. Elmo , The Inter-Mountain

Welcome to Dr. Elmo's "Rust Needle Drive Thru Medical Clinic, Sports Bar and Pool Room."

So are you ready for some football? Now don't get all excited because this is not Hank Williams Jr. No, it's that pill peddler Dr. Elmo who once again is conducting visiting hour and ready to give you, the true blue fan, all of the future winners before the exciting games are played.

As always, the Dr. will be covering those teams which I call, "Dr. Elmo's Dandy Dozen," which are teams located in the Inter-Mountain area.

The "Dandy Dozen" consists of Elkins, Buckhannon-Upshur, Lewis County and Preston in Class AAA.

In Class AA, we have two teams, Philip Barbour and Petersburg. Class A squads featured are Tygarts Valley, Tucker County, Moorefield, East Hardy, Pendleton County and Pocahontas County.

The Dandy Dozen teams will be featured each week, along with West Virginia and a few of the other area teams. Before getting down to the meat of the order, I'd like to tell you that Nurse Goodie Twoshoes will not be with me this season. She is now working as a mud wrestler in a bar in South America. Her sister, Hennrietta, spells her last name unlike her sister. Hennrietta spells it as "To shoos."

Enough about my office and now it's time to get on with week number one. I will include each teams' record for the past year.

ELKINS (8-2) at OAK HILL (4-5): Oak Hill was a Class?AA team last season but has since been moved up with the big boys. The Doctor is just playing a hunch by stating, Elkins will win by 14.

BUCKHANNON UPSHUR (2-8) at BRIDGEPORT (10-0): The Indians were lowered from Class AAA down to Class AA, but one must remember regardless of class, Bridgeport is always strong and the Buccaneers will learn this Friday night when they lose this game by 24 points.

LEWIS COUNTY (4-6) at UNIVERSITY (5-5): These teams did not meet last year but regardless of the past, I still say the UHS Hawks will swoop down on the Minutemen to the tune of 13 points.

HAMPSHIRE COUNTY (1-9) at PRESTON (1-9): With both teams winning just one game last season, the Knights held the edge as they downed Hampshire by just 1- point for their only win. But I say, a win is a win regardless. I will stick with the Preston to win it again this year and yes, by the same 1-point.

GRAFTON (7-3) at PHILIP BARBOUR (4-6): The Bearcats took this one last season by 5 points at Grafton, but they will be playing in Philippi this year, but for some reason this doesn't make any difference. Grafton by 13 this time around.

KEYSER (6-4) at PETERSBURG (1-9): 46 points was the difference last year in Keyser's favor. This year will also be in favor of the visitor. Keyser by 27.

WIRT COUNTY (9-1) at MOOREFIELD (7-3): Wirt won this one last season by a close 7 points at home. This year they'll be playing in Hardy County where the Yellow Jackets never forget. Moorefield by 10.

TYGARTS VALLEY (1-9) at PENDLETON COUNTY (1-8): Another game between teams with just one win last season, but here at the clinic we're calling it a 10-point Pendleton County win.

POCAHONTAS COUNTY (7-3) at TUCKER COUNTY (5-5): The Mountain Lions won this one by 22 down at Dunmore in 2011. This year they're going to do battle in Parsons as the Mountain Lions show off the refurbished R.H. Armstrong Memorial Field with new lights, poles and bleachers.

Here's the odd thing about the game because Tucker County will down the visitors by the same 22 as last season.

EAST FAIRMONT (3-7) at LIBERTY (H) (5-5): East side is playing in Class AA but this should be a good start for the Marion County team with a 3-point win.

FAIRMONT SR. (5-5) at ROBERT C. BYRD (6-4): Both team are playing Class AA football this season and this old Quack sees an 8-point RCB?victory. So loyal patients that just about does it for this week and as Porky Pig would say, "Da, da, da, da, da, dats all folks!"
