Tigers outlast Red Devils in opener

OAK?HILL - L.J. Lawrence scored four touchdowns, including the game-winner with 1:11 remaining in regulation, to lift Elkins to a 43-36 win over Oak Hill Friday night.

With the contest deadlocked at 36 with under two minutes to play in regulation, the Tigers (1-0) recovered a Red Devils fumble on the hosts' 16-yard line with 1:32 to play.

Nick Martin took the first play on the ensuing possesion to the Oak Hill 5-yard line where Lawrence powered in for the game-winning score.

Lawrence, who finished with 255 yards rushing, opened the scoring in the contest when he took Elkins' first play of scrimmage to paydirt.

The Red Devils answered on their ensuing possesion when Jerrell Green broke free to tie the contest at 8-8.

Lawrence then handed the Tigers the lead back when he scampered in from three yards out. Mark Parrack set up the score with an 87-yard kickoff return.

Jalen Jones tied the game back up for Oak Hill when he raced in for a 50-yard touchdown with 7:06 remaining in the first quarter.

Lawrence found the end zone again early in the second quarter for Elkins, scampering in for a 60-yard touchdown to give the Tigers a 24-16 edge.

Elkins extended its lead to 30-16 midway through the third quarter when Clayton Collett scored on a 5-yard run.

The Red Devils battled back again and cut the deficit to 30-24 when Jones scored a 29-yard run.

Martin then pushed the Tigers' lead to 36-24 when he scored on an 8-yard scamper.

Jones scored another touchdown for Oak Hill early in the fourth quarter to cut Elkins' advantage to 36-30 with 11:48 remaining.

The Red Devils took advantage of a recovered onside kick and tied the game at 36 on a K.K. Goodman touchdown run with 8:32 to play.

Martin followed Lawrence in the rushing column for Elkins with 65 yards on 12 carries. Martin added 29 yards on seven totes.

The Tigers will remain on the road next Friday at Hampshire.
