Isobel Spessert Simmons, 90, a former resident of Porterwood, and more recently a resident of Colonial Place, Elkins, departed this life Saturday afternoon, Aug. 25, 2012, at Colonial Place. She died peacefully in her sleep, with her husband, Worlie, at her side.
She was born Tuesday, March 21, 1922, at St. George, a daughter of the late George W. and Grace White Spessert.
On July 20, 1938, at Parsons, she was married to David Worlie Simmons, who survives at Elkins. They had celebrated 74 years of marriage.
Also surviving are two sons, Gary Wayne Simmons and wife, Shirley, of Bethleham, Pa., and David Creig Simmons and wife, Can, of Moravia, Calif.; two daughters, Jan Rae Summerfield and husband, Roger, of Elkins, and Esther Jill Cross and fiance, Wayne Swart, Versailles, Ky.; seven grandchildren, Kimberly, Marla, Sherry, Russell, Christina, Heather and Rob; 20 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
Preceding her in death are three brothers, Coyld, Bill and George "Tick"; five sisters, Ruth, Margaret, Lalah, Laura and Ethel Grace; and two grandchildren, Joe and Gary Simmons
She attended the two room White Ridge School at Limestone. She graduated from the Morgantown Beauty Academy with the class of 1973. She, along with her husband, owned and operated the Simmons Barber and Beauty Shop at the corner of Front and Walnut Street. Then in 1984, they moved the business to their home place in Porterwood, where they continued to operate the Simmons Barber and Beauty Shop and the White Oak Bed and Breakfast.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Simmons retired in 2003. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elkins. She was a noted cook, quilter and she loved to fish and hunt. She will always be remembered by her saying "I hear the calling of the wild."
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted from the funeral home parlor on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. Dr. Marvin Parli will officiate and interment will follow at the Family Moore Cemetery at Porterwood.
