Week No. 1 of the 2012 football season is now in the history books, and as for the first week goes, the doctor was on top his game by hitting 10-of-11 picks. Missing just one game is considered great by some standards, but for the good doctor it resulted in a "so-so" week, because here at the Rusty Neddle Clinic, we aim for perfection.
Just be assured loyal patients, things will be better in weeks to come. A number of fans appear to be somewhat confused with the new classifications of teams this season, so I just though I should give you a brief rundown of the changes.
The biggest shocker of all, seems to be those Class AAA teams, who were lowered down to Class AA. Those squads include: Nicholas County, North Marion, Fairmont Senior, Fairmont East, Robert C. Byrd and yes, even Bridgeport.
Three Class AA teams were up graded to Triple A. Two of the three were undefeated last year with 10-0 records, and are Point Pleasant and Shady Springs.
Class AA teams lowered to Class A were Greenbrier West, Magnolia, Sherman, Tyler Consolidate and Tug Valley. Of all the changes, just keep your eye on Bridgeport, who has already won state championships in all three classes. Will they continue their dominance? We shall see, we shall see.
Enough chit-chat about the past because the doctor only works with the future. ELKINS (1-0) at HAMPSHIRE (1-0): This very well could be an enjoyable trip for the Tigers as they head down to apple country to do battle with Hampshire, who soundly downed Preston in Week 1. This could very well put a damper on a fun trip, but we here at the Rusty Needle seem to think coach Greg Hott has gotten his team together, so much so that we see this one going to the Tigers by a close 3 points.
PRESTON COUNTY (0-1) at LEWIS COUNTY (0-1): Both dropped season openers, so it only stands to reason somebody's going to get a victory and your doctor of knowledge is sticking with the Lewis County by 14 markers.
UNIVERSITY HIGH (1-0) at BUCKHANNON (0-1): The Hawks of University won by 33 in their opener, while the Bucs lost by 15. It's plain math that 15 from 33 equals 18 and by golly University will win this one by18.
PHILIP BARBOUR (0-1) at LINCOLN (0-1): Both teams lost last week but the Colts are getting better, and even though they have to travel into Harrison County, the trip will be well worth it. Put your money on Philip Barbour to win by 6.
PENDLETON COUNTY (1-0) at PETERSBURG (0-1): The Vikings won last year but that was then, and now is now. The Vikings were bombed to the tune of 60-12 last week. The doctor sees the Petersburg woes continuing but not to last week extent. I'll just say, Pendleton County will win its second in a row by a mear 8 points.
EAST HARDY (0-0) at CRAIG COUNTY: I know very little abouy Virginia teams, and many say that I know very little about West Virginia teams. But I do know East Hardy and they will win by 14. MOOREFIELD (1-0) at FRANKFORD (1-0): Frankford poured it on kind of heavy over North Marion while the Yellow Jackets won a 42-35 shootout over Wirt County at home. Now only because this one is being played in Mineral County, I'll take Frankfort by 7.
POCAHONTAS COUNTY (0-1) at PARKERSBURG CATHOLIC (0-1): One of these two will get their first win of the season and there are many who think I've "flipped my wig" because I see Pocahontas getting the win with a 14-point victory.
TUCKER COUNTY (1-0) at TYGARTS VALLEY (0-1): I would think that the Bulldogs would have something to prove since that 50-0 loss last season, and now they've got the Mountain Lions in Mill Creek to try to prove their case. Sorry folks, case dismissed because it's not always true that location, location, location is important. Tucker by 32.
FAIRMONT SENIOR (0-1) at NORTH MARION (0-1): This is one short and sweet. North Marion by a tiny 2.
NOTRE DAME (0-0) at GRAFTON (1-0): This is the Irish's first game against Class AA Grafton, who just nosed out Philip Barbour last week. But since they will be playing in Grafton, I will give this on to the homestanding Bearcats by 24.
MARSHALL (0-0) at WEST VIRGINIA (0-0): I'm not too excited about this one, infact I don't think this one should be played because these two teams come from two different worlds. If the "Eers" keep their mind on the game, it won't even be a contest. I see WVU taking it easy on the Herd by winning this "not the backyard brawl" but this "Saturday afternoon tea party." by 28.
Did you know that just four teams in my "Dandy Dozen" won games last week, while one team was idle and seven bit the dust. Let's hope that things get better this week. Ok patients, I've done all that I could to give you the winners. All that you have to do is follow the doctors orders and remember, I am a professional and there is one thing that you should never forget, and that is that Dr. Elmo Knows. That's all folks!
