A new event will highlight the opening weekend of the upcoming 76th Mountain State Forest Festival.
Sponsored by Yuengling, the "Yuengs & Wings" Chicken Wing Cookoff will be Sept. 29 on Davis Avenue from Second to Fourth streets in Elkins.
From 4 to 7 p.m., patrons can enjoy a variety of wings prepared by vendors vying for the win. Each ticket will be sold for $1, allowing patrons to purchase two chicken wings per ticket. Those who purchase at least $10 worth of wings will be eligible to cast a ballot for the people's choice award.
Local celebrities will serve as official judges.
For those interested in competing, the deadline for entry and payment is Sept. 15. Each team must complete a simple application indicating the amount of wings to be ordered ($2 per pound) which will be available the day of the event. Each team will need to be at the event site at 2 p.m., where a refrigerated truck will provide the specified amount of wings. Other items that will be provided include a tent, tables, garbage bags, paper towels, disposable rubber gloves, metal bucket (for grease removal) and washing station. In order to participate, all team members must provide a valid food handler's card the day of the event.
Event applications are available at the Forest Festival office at 101 Lough St. in Elkins. For additional information or questions, anyone interested can contact the event chairperson, Kate Reed, at 703-635-8532 or kreed@erccc.com.
