Our local fire departments are asking for donations to help buy new equipment and help upgrade their equipment.
I, like most people, take for granted these valuable services until we need them. They are always there when we need them. Fire departments are needed more than ever in this day and age. About the only thing they used to do was fight fires. Now, they are into everything - helping with nature, floods, winds, accidents and so much more. If there's trouble, there they are, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
When your West Virginia firemen hear the call for help, they don't check to see if this is a rich man's mansion or a poor man's shack. You all probably remember some time back when a firemen crew from another state went to a man's house and because he hadn't paid his fire fees, they stood by and let his house burn down. You can bet if a West Virginia fire crew was there, that house would never burn down.
I am proud to be a West Virginia citizen. We West Virginia people have a good reputation all over the world.
One of my proud times was when I was in the Army in Germany in formation. This is a true conversation between a 1st sergeant and a captain. I was standing back in ranks with all these soldiers from different states. I still don't know what brought this on, but the 1st sergeant told the captain, and I quote: "You give me a handful of those West Virginia hillbillies and I'll run this Army for you."
I know these are hard times. Every little bit will be appreciated. Do what you can.
