Phil Jones

September 10, 2012
The Inter-Mountain

Phil Jones of Elkview died, surrounded by his family, Sept. 7, 2012, after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer and heart disease.

He was born Aug. 13, 1933, at Philippi, Barbour County and moved to the Charleston area in 1960. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1956, and he was retired from the U.S. Federal Aviation Agency.

He was a talented self-taught musician and singer and was a founding member of a country/gospel group "The Rays of Sunshine." He had an illustrious after retirement career as a flea market entrepreneur with his shop at the Capital Flea Market, Phil's Fix-It, that he ran with his good friend and fellow musician, Shirlene Dixon.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Mary Shanabarger Jones; his three girls, whom he loved dearly, Diana Roberts (Rick), LuAnn Shomo (Joe) and Crystal Tyler (Jim). He had six grandchildren that he was so proud of, Andrew and Emily Roberts, Nick Shomo and Mallorie Shomo Kennedy (Nick) and Tristan and Larkin Tyler; and two great-grandchildren, Tallen and Cayden Kennedy; sisters, Sue Austin of Philippi and Sherry Asher of St. Claire; special nephew, Mark Frantz, and so many other nieces and nephews, cousins, family and friends, too many to list.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Deloris Snider Jones and Clarence Jones; brother, Merl Jones; and sisters, Emogene Andrick, Betty Foster and Cinda Jones.

The family would like to recognize the nurses at CAMC MICU and 3 North for all their care and support. Phil's last wish was for everyone to quit smoking.

Service will be Tuesday, Sept. 11, at noon at Hafer Funeral Home in Elkview. Burial will follow in Donel C. Kinnard Cemetery. Friends may call today from 6 to 8 pm.

Online condolences may be sent to www.haferfuneralhome.net.Hafer Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
