Elkins Country Dance Society is kicking off its monthly square dances Friday.
Square dancing will get under way at 8 p.m., with a beginning workshop at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for AmeriCorps members and free to Davis and Elkins College students.
Ellen and Eugene Ratcliffe from Monterey, Va., are calling mountain circle square dances. Gerry Milnes and the Stove Stokers will provide live string band music. Milnes is an award-winning old-time fiddler, and the music is bound to have everyone up and dancing.
Square dances will take place the third Friday of each month at the Randolph County Community Arts Center on Randolph Avenue in Elkins. Other dances are scheduled for Oct. 12, Nov. 2 and Nov. 9. The Elkins Country Dance Society is part of the Mountain Dance Trail, a new heritage tourism trail of Augusta Heritage Center.
All dances in the Mountain Dance Trail project are beginner-friendly and open to all ages and levels. A complete dance schedule is available online at www.mountaindancetrail.org. Information also is available by calling the Augusta Heritage Center at 304-637-1349.
Support for this project was provided by the West Virginia Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Country Dance and Song Society.
