Former candidate’s family speaks about allegations

September 15, 2012
The Inter-Mountain

Editor's note: The author of this letter is making reference to an Aug. 18 article in The Inter-Mountain reporting on the state Elections Commission meeting conducted in Charleston. The candidate, Eddie Canterbury, won the successful bid on the Democratic ticket for Barbour County Commission in the May primary.

Editor:

This concerns my brother, Eddie Canterbury, who was a candidate in the Barbour County Commission race.

Eddie does not have any type of paralysis. He is seeing a speech therapist and an opthamologist for his eyes. He did suffer a stroke on June 7.

He requested his name be withdrawn from the November ballot due to his health.

It sounds like the chairman of the (state Elections) Commission, Dr. Robert Rupp, was in doubt about the condition of my brother's health.

How dare he doubt the word of my brother and his doctor that my brother had a stroke?

Then there was a member of the Elections Commission, Mr. Gary Collias, stating, "I think there's a power struggle there" and "I think they're doing that because he's not strong enough to win."

My brother, Eddie, was strong enough to have won this election. I have no doubt that he would have won it.

Eddie isn't just some man off the street who decided he wanted to make Barbour County a better place for all residents. No, Eddie is a man who dedicated years doing just that already.

Eddie's records of his past services to Barbour County can speak for themselves.

You, the residents of Barbour County, can look at his record and know he would have been the only candidate to fill this office for County Commission.

In the future, I suggest those of you who want to be "quoted" get your facts straight before sounding off in the press.

I speak for my family when I say, "We're proud of you Eddie."

Carolyn Canterbury
