My brother and friend, Reid Stuart Mason, was born April 22, 1956, and passed from the earth Sept. 13, 2012.
He follows his mother, Barbara Mason Urschel, and his father, Bill Urschel, into spirit's care and is survived by myself, Holaday Mason, as well as many friends who will miss him terribly.
Reid was a superb photographic artist as well as a truly subtle and beautiful guitarist/musician. Reid was born in California, but his life ended in the community he had come to love in West Virginia. All through his life, he was rich with a love of beauty and the natural world including Orcas Island, Wash., where my mother and Bill lived. He had an artist's heart and mind, which is to say he felt deeply and this was communicated to all who met him. If you knew him, you knew he was a person who cared and was able to touch others with his sweetness of spirit. If a woman has but one blood-brother, she is lucky to have Reid as that brother. I am that lucky woman. I thank all of you who loved him and filled his life for the years he had. It is said that "Absence is a presence." (Wilfred Bion)
Reid Mason's absence will be a presence now for all who loved him for all the rest of our precious days. If you would like to view his gorgeous photographic work, please visit Artists at Work in Elkins or masonphotographics.com
A memorial contribution can be made to Animal Friends of Barbour County, P.O. Box 452 Philippi, WV 26216 where his dear friend Sudie Shipman of Clarksburg works at animal rescue. It's a hero's act to be an artist and open hearted person in this world. My dearest Reid was a hero in more ways than many will ever know. He will be so missed. He is so very loved. In peace. In Love. Always. Holaday Mason
Mr. Mason's request for cremation will be honored. A memorial will be conducted at a later date on Orcas Island, Wash., where he'll rest in beauty with my mother and Bill Urschel.
The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 100 Meadow Lane, Valley Bend has been entrusted with the arrangements for Reid Stuart Mason. Send online condolences to the family at www.therandolphfuneralhome.com.
