CLARKSBURG - Alex Baird fired an 8-over par round of 78, finishing second individually and leading the Elkins High School golf team to a third-place finish Monday in the Big 10 Conference golf tournament at the Clarksburg Country Club.

Bridgeport's Marco Oliverio fired a 77 to take medalist honors, helping the Indians to finish fifth in the 12-team match.

North Marion, led by Ryan Powell's 78 and Caleb Lee's 79, captured the team title with a total score of 326.

Fairmont Senior took second at 334, followed by Elkins at 337.

"Our goal was to try to win the tournament," Elkins coach Dave Baird said. "But some of our players didn't have their best day. I was happy to see Alex and Kelsi (Trippett), being seniors in their last conference match, make the all-conference team."

Alex Baird made the first-team list, while Trippett fired an 86 to earn a nod on the second team. Braden Hammond shot an 85 to also earn a spot on the second team.

Others competing for the Tigers Monday were Kollin Hopwood (88), Brendan Cain (93) and Kole Hopwood (94).

Philip Barbour finished seventh overall in the match, posting a team score of 364.

Logan Collins led the way for the Colts with an 85, followed by Luke Freeman (89), Caleb Hawkins (93), Jacob Nestor (97), Zach Howdershelt (98) and Tyler Clifton (99).

"The conditions were tough today," Philip Barbour coach Doug Kirkpatrick said. "A lot of pin placements were sucker pins, meaning if you missed the pin, you were going to put up a big score. But we shot our average, so we're pleased. All we can do is get better."

Buckhannon-Upshur took ninth in the tournament, as the golfers combined to card a 367 score. Dalton Westfall led the way with an 87, followed by Jacob Hinzman (90), Dalton Crislip (92), Stetson West (98) and Jeffrey Davis (131).

"We didn't quite play up to our potential," B-U coach Chris Gow said. "It was just one of those days."

Lewis County finished in 10th place and was led by Aaron Hall with a 93. Mark Moran shot 95, followed by Chris Weaver (98), Jared Myers (105), Jacob Davisson (111) and Bryson Butcher (117).

The regional qualifier for the state tournament will be held Sept. 24. Elkins, Buckhannon-Upshur and Lewis County will travel to Stonewall Resort for an 18-hole Class AAA?match. Philip Barbour will head to the Valley View Golf Course in Moorefield for the Class AA competition.
