Elkins High School senior Brittany Schmidlen gathers Tuesday with community leaders and family to sign a proclamation declaring Sept. 29 as West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Awareness Day and October as West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. As part of her senior project, Schmidlen also will host a pink balloon release during the Elkins High School football game Sept. 28 and a pink duck race Sept. 29. Schmidlen hopes to raise $5,000 to benefit the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation, and all funds will remain in West Virginia.
